Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays! We’re back with our ninth edition of Fan Tuesday and it’s our first one of the new year. Every Tuesday we will highlight a Drake fan and their story. A portion of their story will be shared on Instagram while you will be able to view the full story here in the fan section of the website. It is my wish to bring Drake fans closer together by allowing everyone to share their personal connection to him. I also want to highlight the many ways Drake has inspired and continues to inspire people from all across the globe.
Name: July Torres
“It was 11 PM on September 23, 2013 and I found myself in the middle of New York City by myself looking for the Best Buy store where Drake’s CD signing for Nothing Was The Same was going to be held. Only the first 500 people would be able to meet Drake. When I was finally able to find the store, I saw fans sitting on bare concrete with blankets, some had chairs, lined up in hopes of meeting our idol. It was September, so it was a bit cold, but that did not stop us. I made my way to the back of the line, relieved that I had a spot in line and I would be meeting Drake. Time was passing very slowly, fans started to get sleepy, our phones started losing battery power, but still, we were happy to be there. The place where we were lined up was right in front of dumpsters and a lot of us had to lie down on the cardboard boxes we were given by a nice security guard so we wouldn’t have to lie down on the cold, dirty concrete. The security guard honestly made the process so much easier because he was funny and had us entertained the whole time. I was thankful for that. Anyway, it was finally the next day and 8AM was approaching. We would finally be able to enter the store to purchase the CD most of us hadn’t heard yet, as well as get our wristbands to meet our idol. Of course, nothing ever happens when it’s supposed to, so we had to wait a little longer. At this point we are cold and tired, but determined. The time finally came and I entered the store. I picked up 3 copies of NWTS because I wanted Drake to have great first week sales and go to number 1. When I was about to pay, I asked the cashier to ring them up separately because I wanted all 3 CD’s to count towards the Billboard charts.
So what happened? I stepped outside after getting my wristband, I looked at my receipt and I noticed that the cashier had only rung me up for 1 CD, instead of 3. I couldn’t go back in because of the immense amount of people trying to get in to get a wristband. (later on, I bought 3 more copies to make up for it). We wouldn’t be able to meet Drake and get our CD’s signed until 6PM. So I decided to go home. When the time arrived, I headed back to Best Buy and there were fans lined up again, so I lined up in the back feeling anxious. When it was finally 6 PM, we didn’t get to meet Drake yet because again, nothing ever happens when it’s supposed to, so it was delayed. We were all so excited to meet Drake, that any fancy car that drove by, we thought was Drake. Fans were in line, singing, rapping and dancing to his songs. We also spotted Courtne, who was so sweet to fans. Finally, fans were directed inside and the line was moving extremely slowly, it was getting dark and I thought I might not get to meet him because it was getting late and he might be tired. Thankfully, I was finally directed inside, we had to go up the escalators and wait there. While waiting, we spotted OB, who was kind and was joking around with fans. I was finally upstairs (still waiting in line) and at this point I felt okay. It was going to be my second time meeting him (the first time I cried… a lot), so I could handle it this time. I wasn’t shaking or tearing up by this time, so I’d be okay.
I got closer to the front of the line where it was almost my turn, and I got a glimpse of my idol, Drake. He was wearing the ICONIC Jaden Smith VMA’s reaction shirt, signing CD’s and he was smiling so big! At that point, I was still okay. Then I was the first person in line, meaning I would be next. I take out my 3 NWTS CD’s and now I start shaking. The lady that was directing fans to Drake when it was their turn told me that he was only signing one CD, to put away the rest, but I didn’t listen. It was finally my turn to meet him and the tears started to fall. I forgot where I was. I was actually standing in front of the person I’ve idolized since 2010. He took my CD’s from my hands and he signed all 3. I couldn’t believe it. Next thing I know, Drake was tapping me on my arm and asking me to look at the camera in front of me and behind him. I didn’t know what he was talking about, I went blank at that point and I did not see a camera. I just remember him looking behind him and smiling so big! Shortly after that, I was handed 2 Polaroid pictures of Drake and I! I made my way outside after meeting him and I looked at the pictures and I am holding his wrist in the picture, which I still have no recollection of. At least I have the picture to prove it (to myself). Every time I’ve met or seen Drake in concert, it has never been easy. It has always been a challenge, but I’m always up for it because his music means a lot to me. I think he’s such an amazing person who appreciates his fans and has given us amazing music and he deserves to be doted on. This experience was one I’ll never forget.”
