Ever since his debut, Drake has been a master of making each year more extraordinary than the last. 2016 was no exception.
Starting off the year right, “Summer Sixteen” dropped on Episode 14 of OVO Sound Radio and quickly became the anthem for 2016. The song was aggressive and painted a very clear picture for what Drake had planned for the year: Domination.
Before the Celebrity All-Star Game, Drake was awarded with the incredible honor of receiving the key to Toronto by Mayor Tory. “This is one of the greatest moments of my life, if not the greatest,” said Drake.
Drake also served as the coach for the Canadian team for the 2016 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on Feb. 12, with Steve Nash, Jose Bautista and DeMar DeRozan serving as his assistant coaches. And of course, Team Canada came through with the win.
On March 20th, Drake and OVO Sound performed a surprise set at SXSW Fader Fort. DVSN, Roy Woods, Majid Jordan and PARTYNEXTDOOR all took the stage along with Drake.
Drake also covered SLAM Magazine, alongside Toronto Raptors players Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. As everyone knows, Drake is the Global Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors.
Drake obtained his first UK #1 as a lead artist with “One Dance”.
And of course, April was also the month that we were finally blessed with “Views”. It premiered on Apple Music on April 29th.
May was a busy month. To start us off, Drake joined the league of the world’s richest rappers, coming in at #5.
And as everyone knows by now, ‘Views’ debuted at #1 and broke a multitude of streaming records. As reported, ‘Views’ was a personal best for Drake, 852,000 copies being sold without counting streaming.
“One Dance” continued to dominate, awarding Drake his first #1 as a lead artist. And as if that wasn’t enough, The Boy also topped Justin Bieber’s old record. Drake had 20 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, overtaking Bieber’s record by 3.
Drake also topped Bieber on the Spotify charts, becoming Spotify’s most streamed artist.
On May 14th, Drake made his SNL return with a number of funny skits as well as gracing the stage.
Lastly, Drake also visited and spoke at the Nelson Mandela Foundation. “I encourage you to do everything that you can to make the future here as bright as you possibly can. We’re all young. We all have some end goal or some dream.” – Drake
